Located in southern Herzegovina, Medjugorje is famous for being one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage destinations in the world. The name of this wonderful town literally means "between mountains". Medjugorje became popular among believers, worldwide as well, due to apparitions of the Virgin Mary which were firstly seen by local children in 1981.However, it took a long time for the Vatican to recognize the apparitions and, on May 12th 2019, pilgrimages to Medjugorje were officially authorized. Today, Medjugorje is one of the most visited touristic place in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with around a million tourists visiting each year. One of the main attractions to visit is the Church of St. James. Built by the Bishop of Mostar Paškal Buconjić in 1892, it is the symbol of the Parish and the center of gatherings. Other attractions include Apparition Hill, where the first apparition in 1981 took place and the impressive 12-meter tall crucifix on the Križevac Mountain, which completes the Stations of the Cross. Medjugorje is also famous for being the birthplace of notable Croatian tennis players Marin Čilić and Ivan Dodig.
